Polestar is a Swedish automotive brand established in 1996 by Volvo Cars' partner Flash/Polestar Racing and acquired in 2015 by Volvo, which itself was acquired by Geely from Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China in 2010. Now a standalone brand, Polestar is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden with vehicle production taking place in China.

The 2022 Polestar 2+2 coupe is a very special PHEV. It’s gorgeous to look at, has a combined system output of 619 horsepower, an impressive all-electric driving range of 52 miles and a total EPA-estimated range of 470 miles.

It’s also expensive! Only 1500 copies of this Plug-In Hybrid will be produced over the car’s 3-year lifespan. 2022 will be the 3rd and final year the car is manufactured. It has been reported that the USA gets just 125 of them per year. Basic MSRP is $155,000 before add-ons.

The Polestar 1 uses a Petrol 2 litre In-line 4-cyl. supercharged and turbocharged engine, 3 electric motors + Crank ISG, plus a 34kWh battery arranged in 3 stacks (2 packs) to generate power. It uses an Öhlins + double wishbone (front) / integral link (rear) suspension and Akebono 6-piston calipers (front) and Conti EPB (rear) for brakes. This is an All-Wheel Drive vehicle, with the engine and 1 electric motor turning the front wheels and the two electric motors spinning the back wheels. The Polestar uses the engine and front wheels in gas mode and the rear motors for electic mode.

Says cnet.com reviewer Daniel Golson: “Nothing about the Polestar 1’s looks has changed for the 2021 model year. Just five no-cost "colors" are available – I say colors in quotes because there's white, black, two grays and a dark blue – and each shade is available in a matte finish for an extra $5,000. The exterior trim is offered in chrome or gloss black, and the awesome 21-inch four-spoke wheels can be had in gloss black, matte-black or a diamond cut finish. On the inside you can get the upholstery in either black or black and white leather. Appearance stuff aside, the Polestar 1 doesn't have any available packages or optional extras. And that's also a fine thing, as the Polestar 1 already has a whopping price tag of $155,000. The Polestar 1 is a super niche vehicle, but it was always meant to be just that. It's a plug-in-hybrid, carbon-fiber-bodied, two-door coupe with concept-car looks, from a Volvo-run company that will only produce full EVs from now on. There will probably never be another car like the Polestar 1.”

Infotainment and Connectivity-wise, this PHEV provides virtually every kind of tech a modern car could have, including a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Angled toward the driver for ease of use, the screen is vertical. Drivers use a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster as well as a head-up display. Two USB ports can be used in the front seats. Polestar Connect – the brand’s app – lets you use your phone as a key. Adjusting cabin climate and locking and unlocking the car from anywhere can be accomplished using Polestar Connect.

Polestar says its PHEV is exactingly engineered and extremely aerodynamic. The carmaker went to “great lengths to wind test Polestar 1. Optimizing the car’s aerodynamics required a three-ton fan, a steel tunnel measuring 11 meters in diameter and 163 meters in length, a heat exchanger the size of a wall, 24 hours of computer simulations, innumerable six-hour shifts, and a whole lot of liquid nitrogen smoke.”

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer makes up almost the entire upper body of Polestar 1. Its metal components are 10 times stronger than steel and 5 times lighter. Bonded to the steel underbody, they increase torsional stiffness by 45 percent.

Accuracy is critical in the Polestar Chengdu assembly shop. The assembly, installation, finishing, and inspection processes of the Polestar 1 are so exacting that the manufacturing plant can produce only 2 per day.
