Lexus is finally joining the PHEV party by unveiling its 1st-ever plug-in hybrid: the all-new 2022 NX 450h.

With a re-imaged exterior, this Lexus PHEV creates an positive impression from every angle. Seven years after debuting the first-ever NX, then selling a million units globally, the Japanese carmaker has introduced its Second-Gen NX with both a hybrid and plug-in hybrid version.

This review is about the plug-in, a compact luxury crossover which comes in two trims: NX 450h+ AWD (MSRP: $55,650), and NX 450h+ F Sport handling (MSRP: $56,900).

Important facts about the 2022 Lexus NX 450h Plug-In Hybrid:
• 36 Pure Electrical miles, Total Range = 550 miles
• 41/37/39 City/Highway/Combined, 84 MPGe
• In-line 4-cylinder engine with Lexus Hybrid Electric Drive
• The EPA estimates that drivers will save $3,750 in fuel costs driving a 2022 NX 450h compared to driving a comparable new gas-powered car
• The two trims are both All Wheel Drive Vehicles
• 0 to 60 in 6 seconds
• Four-wheel power-assisted discs with four-sensor, four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS); Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist with regenerative braking
• 20-in split-five-spoke alloy wheels
• Welded-steel unibody
• Cargo volume: 22.7 cu ft – 46.9 cu ft including area behind front seats

The 2022 Lexus NX plug-in hybrid powertrain works with a 2.5-liter engine and two electric motors. One e-motor powers the front wheels; the other e-motor powers the back wheels. The PHEV powertrain delivers 304 Horsepower. There are four drive modes: EV mode, AUTO EV/HEV mode, HEV mode, and Self-charge mode.

In EV Mode, the vehicle gets powered on the electricity stored in its traction battery, emitting no CO2 exhaust. In AUTO EV/HV mode, the vehicle auto-selects the drive mode, either pure electric or hybrid, depending on the amount of charge remaining in the traction battery, route, traction information, and other data. In HV mode, the powertrain uses both gasoline and electricity to create the best performance. In Self-charge mode, the traction battery charges itself up using the power of the engine.

The traction battery – an 18.1 Lithium-Ion battery pack – provides 36 Pure Electrical Miles – a decent amount for a PHEV. With an available 6.6kW charger onboard, a Level 2 charger will replenish the PHEV in 2.5 hours. A Level 1 charger will do it in 4.5 hours.

The 2022 Lexus NX plug-in hybrid achieves a top speed of 135 km/h (84 mph) solely on electric power – the same EV mode top speed as that of the RAV4 PHEV, one of the popular plug-in hybrid models in the mass market segment. Toyota’s RAV4 PHEV SUV can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while Lexus PHEV SUV accomplishes the same in 6 seconds.

The 2022 NX comes standard with many new/improved technologies. For the first time in an NX, Lexus is offering a 7-inch HD MID and a 10-inch head-up display for its NX models. And the steering wheel has new ‘Touch tracer’ switches with a touch-based operation.

Developed in the U.S., the all-new Lexus Interface multimedia system in the center stack integrates a 9.8-inch touchscreen or a significantly larger, optional 14-inch touchscreen. The Lexus Interface features cloud navigation, a new Voice Assistant, dual microphones, enhanced noise-cancellation, wireless Apple CarPlay, and wireless Android Auto. Nature-inspired Thematic Ambient Illumination with 14 mood lighting theme options, wireless smartphone charger, and Digital Key have been added to the 2022 NX as well.

The 2022 NX’s no-price color options include: Atomic Silver, Caviar, Nori Green Pearl, Grecian Water, Redline, and Obsidian (an F-Sport-exclusive). Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0 (F-Sport-exclusive), Cloudburst Gray, Eminent White Pearl, Ultra White (F-Sport-exclusive), and Cadmium Orange are optional colors costing more.

The 2022 Lexus NX 450h contains extensive safety features. It’s the first Lexus to get the Lexus Safety System 3.0+ safety suite, comprising standard features like dynamic radar cruise control and oncoming pedestrian detection.

Safety features include:
• Lexus Safety System+ 3.0: All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management
• Lexus Safety System+ 3.0: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Intersection Support
• Lexus Safety System+ 3.0: Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist

No safety reviews have been published yet for the NX 450h by the NHTSA nor IIHS. The 2021 Lexus NX SUV was awarded a Top SafetyPick+ award from the IIHS. Though the 2022 model is all-new, it stands to reason that Lexus will carry over the same safety characteristics for the second generation that made the first generation a Top SafetyPick+. The new NX shares its platform with the Toyota RAV4, which has a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS.

The 2022 Lexus NX 450h is eligible for a Federal Tax Credit of up to $7,500.
