The 2019 Volvo XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid offers irresistible comfort, superb safety features, advanced technology, 85.7 cubic feet of storage (with seats folded) and seating for 7. Consumer Guide has given Volvo’s luxury hybrid SUV The 2019 Best Buy In Its Class Award.
The XC90 projects a powerful presence with its elegant and distinctive Scandinavian design. The front deploys Volvo’s famous upright grill and the back is framed by Volvo’s unmistakable tail lights, which have made Volvo cars highly recognizable throughout their history.
The XC90 T8 PHEV comes in three trims: T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Momentum ($66,300 MSRP), T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid Inscription $72,350 MSRP), and T8 eAWD Plug-in Hybrid R-Design ($71,250 MSRP).
All three trims come standard with a Direct-Injected Turbo & Supercharged Engine with an 87 hp Electric Motor, and are environmentally classified as ULEV-II vehicles. A ULEV is an Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle. The engines offer a combined 400 hp from its gas and electric powertrain, providing world-class efficiency. The car is EPA-rated for 17 pure miles of EV-only range. It has an EPA-rated 58MPGe combined city/highway and n EPA-rated 25MPG combined city/highway. The Volvo PHEV has a total range of 490 miles.
The XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid’s luxurious yet refined interior is designed and built with the best Swedish craftsmanship. The cabin feels clean and uncluttered, practical as well as beautiful. The Orrefors crystal glass gear shifter is a Volvo accent specifically created for the car.
Each backrest folds flat to provide complete flexibility for carrying passengers or cargo. The third row of seats can even be folded from the rear tailgate at the touch of a button. The driver and passenger seats are available with massage and ventilation functions. The second and third rows are raised above the ones in front – like the seats in a theater – to give occupants better views. All three seats in the second row slide and recline, and the third row seats offers class-leading legroom.
Volvo says of its touchscreen: “The 9-inch Sensus Touchscreen is at the heart of how you control many of the functions in the XC90. Sleek and responsive, it uses bold, clear graphics and a portrait format that makes reading information and maps easy, with less scrolling. The touchscreen is so responsive that you can use it wearing gloves, while the surface has a special coating that reduces glare.”
The Digital Driver Display behind the steering wheel automatically adjusts brightness to the surrounding light conditions. An available Graphical Head-Up Display will project info onto the windshield, so you can keep your eyes on the road. A voice control function allows you to operate climate control, navigation, media and phone just by speaking naturally.
The XC90 was designed from the ground up for superb sound. Volvo’s choice of the Bowers & Wilkins system delivers superior clarity and realism via 19 speakers including a special subwoofer that pulls air in rom outside the car to create a deeper, fuller bass.
Three separate modes – Studio, Individual Stage and Gothenburg Concert Hall – allow you to customize the sound to your music or mood. Stainless steel speaker grilles and Bowers & Wilkins’ trademark yellow speaker cones provide a modern, luxury tech look.
The XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and is easily connected to your smartphone, making the 9-inch Sensus Touchscreen an easy-to-use extension. You can access your music and messages or make calls using voice control to talk to your phone’s personal assistant. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto use the lower half of the screen; the car’s other functions are displayed above.
Double wishbone suspension at the front and Volvo’s unique integral link rear axle, built from lightweight materials, save weight and ensure the hybrid SUV responds precisely. Rides over long distances are quiet, comfortable and vibration free, helped by available laminated windows that reduce noise.
Volvo safety is legendary; it’s the result of decades of innovation. Ultra high-strength boron steel – one of the strongest types available – forms a rigid safety cell around the car’s occupants. Safety belt pre-tensioners and load limiters keep the belts in just the right state of tension while not exerting too much pressure on the body. The XC90 was rated as a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), making it a good choice for drivers who prioritize safety.
