Over the years, Acura has become respected for its design innovations; designs with purpose and designs so advanced and futuristic they never see the light of day. Honda’s luxury brand has created a client base devoted to engineering excellence, performance and artistry. Acura’s core value is represented in a single phrase: Precision-crafted performance.
Acura’s MDX moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional Luxury." According to Honda, the MDX is the best-selling three-row luxury crossover of all time. Between 2000 and 2018, close to 900,000 MDX crossovers were sold in the USA alone (Wikipedia). In a 2019 iSeeCars study, the MDX was named as “The Luxury Vehicle that owners keep for the longest time.”
Acura’s MDX Hybrid version was first sold in 2017.
The Japanese carmaker has created a powerful drive and luxury amenities for its 2019 3-row, Acura MDX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD SUV. Offering seating for 7 passengers, excellent scores from both crash-test agencies and a quickness that’s surprising for most crossover SUVs, the Acura MDX Hybrid is an engaging alternative to the usual brands.
Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is a top automotive technology that gives you a trifecta of quicker acceleration, improved handling and greater fuel efficiency. It’s part of the same technology devised for Acura’s highly-praised NSX. Says Acura: “Every Acura Sport Hybrid is designed for an exacting balance of next-gen exhilaration and luxury comfort. Powered by NSX technology, you get instant gratification, confidence in handling, fuel efficiency and all-wheel drive weather stability. Interior refinements and remarkable quiet complete the experience.”
Joining a 257-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 engine in powering the front wheels is a 47hp electric motor, located in the transmission housing. Two additional 36 horsepower motors are mounted side by side between the rear wheels. Each rear motor powers a single rear wheel and they operate independently of each other. A lithium-ion battery powers the three motors. When the vehicle is decelerating, the motors charge the battery. During hard acceleration, the engine and three motors combine to produce 321 horsepower.
The 2019 MDX Hybrid has received an EPA-rated 26/27/27MPG for city/highway/combined.
The 2019 Acura MDX Hybrid comes in one trim: Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive. You can pick it with the Technology Package ($52,800 MSRP), or pick it with the Advance Package ($59,500 MSRP).
Technology Package features include: 20-inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels, LED Puddle Lights, Power-Folding Side Mirrors, GPS-Linked Climate Control, Sport Seats with Perforated Leather, Natural Wood Trim, Acura Navigation with 3D View and AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Street and Freeway Conditions and Traffic Rerouting, ELS Studio Premium Audio with 10 speakers, HD Radio, Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers, Parking Sensors (front and rear), Color Multi-Information Display (MID) with Turn-By-Turn Guidance, Remote Engine Start with Vehicle Feedback, Blind spot information system, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor.
Advance Package features include: Active Chassis Damper System, LED Fog Lights, Automatic Dimming Side Mirrors, Roof Rails, Heated and Ventilated Front Seats, Heated Second Row Captain’s Chairs, Heated Steering Wheel, Perforated Milano Leather Seats, Natural Wood accents, Second Row Center Console with Sliding Tray.
Says Edmunds: “The current generation MDX dates to the 2014 model year, which is getting into senior citizen status for the automotive world. Yet the 2019 Acura MDX's virtues are intact. Thanks to a constant stream of updates, the MDX remains a top pick for a luxury SUV. With three rows of seating and a large, comfortable cabin, it works great as a family hauler, and it presents plenty of value thanks to an impressive number of standard features for the money.”
Notably, Edmunds picked the 2019 Acura MDX Hybrid as one of Edmunds' Best Hybrid SUVs for this year.
Cargo-wise, the hybrid has lots of flexibility: the second row can split 60/40 and the third-row seatbacks can fold down into the floor. 15 cubic feet lies behind the third row with no seats folded. With the second row folded, 90 cubic feet of space are available. That’s a lot of storage space.
Says autotrader.com: “Derived from the excellent MDX luxury crossover, the 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid ratchets up the excitement with a powerful hybrid system, a sport suspension and impressive fuel economy. With the same reputation for quality, value and dependability as the standard MDX, the Sport Hybrid ups the playfulness, thanks mainly to the hybrid's clever 3-electric-motor setup similar to that found in the NSX supercar. The hybrid design provides the MDX Sport Hybrid with superior road-holding abilities in all types of weather and adds 30 additional horsepower without sacrificing any interior space. Even the pricing is similar, with the hybrid a mere $1,500 more than the similarly equipped MDX Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). In this field, the MDX Sport Hybrid has a few notable competitors.”
